Youth Leadership Program

Developing tomorrow’s Leaders
YouLeaP is specifically designed program to assist learning through practical, written, listening, viewing and oral learning techniques, enabling students with a lower English proficiency to participate fully. All students, whether lacking in confidence or naturally self-assured will benefit from this course. This programme consists of two independent levels:
Flyer Level – For age group 10 to 13 years
High-Flyer Level – For age group 14 to 18 years

Aims & Objectives of the Program:
The Youth Leadership Program is specifically designed to help young people become more active and productive members of their communities. The program aims to:
• develop in students an awareness of their own leadership potential
• provide students with leadership skills that will enable them to act responsibly in all aspects of their lives
• help students develop their leadership abilities so they will be able to meet present and future challenges in a global society
• provide students with opportunities to practice leadership skills within a learning environment

This program is a fully-integrated package of a blend of instructor-led class-based activities and games with web based multimedia program that develops students’ leadership potential and helps them become more rounded and able members of their respective communities.

Program Outline
Flyer Level (10-13 years)
This program equips students with a basic understanding of leadership and is divided into four modules:

Module 01: Opening eyes
Effective leaders understand themselves and have the capacity to understand others. To understand others, people need a clear concept of their own identity, self-image and their role in the community. Leaders constantly assess their strengths and weaknesses and an understanding of this will inform a student’s potential. Leadership relies on an ability to combine knowledge of self and others to advance both personal and group goals.

Module 02: Leadership defined
Leadership is a process. As the context changes, the roles and behaviour of leaders and followers must also change. In seeking to define leadership, students learn that respected leaders act ethically and responsibly. They develop an understanding that active leadership may involve personal and public risk and learn that there are many influences on an individual’s leadership style.

Module 03: Becoming a leader
Students learn about some of the skills required to lead: vision, charisma, effective communication, goal setting, decision-making and mentoring. Practising these skills within the context of social groups builds students’ confidence and prepares them to assume a variety of leadership roles.

Module 04: Actions speak louder than words
Providing leadership through service further hones students’ skills. It encourages them to define community and to independently assess community needs. It enables them to develop an understanding of stewardship and responsible ownership of their environment. It provides opportunities for them to experience responsible and active citizenship. Finally, it encourages students to develop altruistic patterns of behaviour by providing opportunities for voluntary service.

Hi-Flyer Level (14-18 years)
This programme builds on the concepts and skills covered at the Flyer level. However, students do not need to take the Flyer level before taking High-Flyer. It is divided into four modules:

Module 01: Leadership potential
Most individuals have leadership potential, the unleashing and effective channelling of which is the starting point to the moulding of young people into impressive leaders in both their personal and professional lives. The age range of 14 to 18 is the optimal time for individuals to be taught the nuances of leadership by highlighting their strengths and weaknesses and simultaneously correlating them with environmental opportunities and threats.

Module 02: Exploring leadership
Exploring leadership is where students begin to develop their own potential and align it to different leadership styles. In this module, our potential leaders start to relate their behavioural traits with the actual characteristics required for leadership. They should begin to realise where they fit into the bigger picture and how they can move ahead to become successful leaders.

Module 03: Leading others
Leadership does not happen overnight, and it is imperative for a person to be able to lead from the front. Observing the reactions of peers, friends, relatives and others in social contexts can provide students with insight as to whether they are on their way to becoming successful leaders or need to alter their behaviour.

Module 04: Active leadership
Active leaders are those who find their way to the top by adopting a hands-on approach. Active leaders have a tendency to be more successful in the long term. This is because they have gained more real-life experience which students will appreciate as they work through this active model.
Delivery Methods:
The programme is built upon the following four modular blocks:
• Classroom Teaching (Instructor Led Training): Optional (Around 36 Hours)
• Online Learning (Multimedia based self-paced Independent learning)
• Project Work: (Practical project work per level)
• Assessment: At the end of the program, the overall assessment of the participant is done based on the set parameter to evaluate their level of learning.

Classroom delivery methods include:
• Activities (Individual and group activities)
• Storytelling
• Role-play
• Group Discussion
• Brainstorming
• Quizzes
• Games

Additionally, a number of optional activities are suggested in the parent book that students and their parents can make use of. This time is not considered to be part of the core program.

Key Assessment Criteria:
The following four assessment criteria must be met for students to be awarded the YouLeaP certificate:
• 75% attendance throughout the program
• Participation in-class activities assessed at a level that warrants a passing grade
• Submission of 1 project across the program to the teacher and assessed to be at a level that warrants a passing grade.
• Presentation of the project to a school-appointed panel of judges and assessed by the panel to be at a level that warrants a passing grade.

In-class participation, project development and project presentations will all be graded on a Pass/Fail basis. Students need to achieve a Pass grade in each of these assessable components to be eligible for receiving the certificate.
Students are required to complete one project over the running of the program at either level. The project will be assessed by the teacher and then graded as either Pass or Fail. Students need to achieve a Pass grade in order to proceed further. Students who get a Fail will have a maximum of 3 attempts to re-submit their projects and achieve a Pass grade.

Quality Assurance for Validation:
At the end of every program, the school will submit to YouleaP Management a sample of project work submitted by students amounting to approximately 15% of total projects or six candidates whichever is the smaller number, including the top, middle and bottom candidates as well as a fair representation of those in between. YouleaP Management will review these projects and the evaluation sheets to validate that the school has been delivering and evaluating student work to an appropriate and acceptable standard. The schools will be required to maintain all projects submitted by the students and can be asked at any point in time by YouleaP Management to submit or allow access to the full set of projects submitted by students
